The Saola Foundation
The saola is one of the world's rarest mammals – and perhaps the most endangered mammal in the world. The last time it was seen in the wild was in 2013. The saola is on the IUCN Red List, where it is described as critically endangered, and it is estimated that there are fewer than 100 individuals left in the wild, inhabiting remote forested areas in the Annamite Mountains of Laos and Vietnam.
Givskud Zoo Nature Fund supports the Saola Foundation, which aims to search for the rare animals in the wild. If they are found, the goal is to capture a small number, breed them, and ultimately reintroduce them and establish a larger population in the wild.
